How does it work?

The anti-spam system that is currently in use at St Michael's College is server based. What this means is that the server inspects all E-Mail as it comes into the college and decides at that point weather or not the E-Mail is a legitimate message or SPAM.

If the message is calculated to be legitimate, then the message is delivered to your Inbox.

If the server calculates the E-Mail is SPAM it is sent to you JUNK E-mail folder.

All messages in the JUNK E-mail folder WILL BE REMOVED AFTER 7 DAYS.

How do I turn it on?

To use this feature you need tell the server you wish to. This setting can be made from your E-Mail account under the blue Options button located on the lower left-hand side of the screen as you are looking at your E-Mail.

On this screen there is a section called: Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention

Place a tick in the box next to: Filter Junk E-mail. This will tell the server that you wish to enable SPAM filtering.

What if legitimate E-Mail is being caught as SPAM?

There are some settings that you can make to assist the server in deciding weather or not the message is legitimate. These settings can be made from your E-Mail account under the blue Options button located on the lower left-hand side of the screen as you are looking at your E-Mail.

On this screen there is a section called: Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention

In this section there is a button called: Manage Junk E-mail Lists... If you press this button you will have 3 options available to you:

  • Safe Senders - any E-Mail address listed will always be treated as legitimate and never be placed in the Junk E-mail folder
  • Safe Recipients - any E-Mail address listed that is included in the To, CC or BCC fields will always be treated as legitimate and never be placed in the Junk E-mail folder DO NOT PLACE YOUR ADDRESS ON THIS LIST
  • Blocked Senders - any E-Mail that is received from any address listed on this page will always be treated as SPAM. (Please note that you cannot place any other college E-Mail address on this list, only Internet based address)

Another way of doing this is while you are looking at your Inbox or Junk E-mail folder you can right-click the mouse and select Add Sender to... This will automatically add the E-Mail address of the selected person to the Safe Senders or Blocked Senders list (depending on your choice).

This will assist you in being able to control some of the SPAM that you might be receiving.
